How we fix Wi-Fi performance issues

“Upgrade the internet” is rarely the answer. Most Wi-Fi problems come from coverage, interference, poor configuration, or too many devices competing for airtime. We diagnose the root cause and fix it properly.

1. Baseline and symptoms

Confirm what users see, where it happens, and when. We map the problem to rooms, floors, or device types.

2. Wireless survey

Measure signal strength, noise, channel overlap, roaming behaviour, and airtime utilisation.

3. Identify constraints

Building materials, neighbouring networks, AP placement, client device behaviour, and upstream switching.

4. Fix configuration

Channel plans, transmit power, band steering, minimum data rates, roaming tuning, and SSID strategy.

5. Add or move access points

Only when needed. We place APs for capacity and coverage, not guesswork.

6. Validate and document

Post-change survey results, user validation, and a clear handover with the new standard.

Why is our Wi-Fi slow when the internet connection is fast?

Because they are different problems. A fast circuit does not help if the wireless layer cannot deliver it to the device — and most of the complaints we are called in for come from coverage gaps, channel interference from neighbouring networks, poor access point placement, or too many devices competing for airtime on the same radio. Upgrading the internet is the most common wasted spend in this area. We measure what is actually happening before recommending anything, which frequently means the fix is configuration and placement rather than new hardware.

What is a wireless site survey, and do we need one?

A survey measures the real radio environment in your building — signal strength, noise, channel overlap, roaming behaviour and how much airtime is actually available — instead of predicting it from a floor plan. You need one if you are fitting out a new office, if coverage is unreliable and nobody can say why, or if a previous design was never validated on site. Building materials, glass partitioning and neighbouring tenants change wireless behaviour enough that a plan-only design is genuinely a guess.

Is a predictive design enough, or do you need to come on site?

A predictive model is a reasonable starting point for a new fit-out, but it should not be the finished answer. Predictive tools assume wall materials, ignore the neighbouring networks you will actually share the spectrum with, and cannot see how the fit-out was really built. We validate on site and adjust — and if a provider quotes you a wireless design with no on-site validation at any stage, that is worth questioning before you buy it.

Which Wi-Fi vendors do you work with?

We work with the major business-grade platforms — Cisco Meraki, Aruba (HPE), Ruckus, Cisco Catalyst and Ubiquiti — and we are vendor-neutral about which one fits. The right choice depends on the building, the density of users, how many sites you need to manage centrally and what your team can realistically run day to day, not on which brand a supplier happens to carry. If you already have an estate on one platform we will usually recommend staying consistent rather than mixing.

How many access points do we need?

There is no reliable per-square-foot rule, which is why the honest answer comes from a survey rather than a quote. Access point count is driven by user and device density, the applications in use, the building’s materials and layout, and how much capacity you need at peak rather than average. Under-provisioning causes the dead zones people complain about; over-provisioning causes access points to interfere with each other, which produces the same symptoms. We place them for measured coverage and capacity.

Can you fix our existing Wi-Fi, or does it all need replacing?

Very often it can be fixed. We diagnose first — baseline the symptoms, survey, identify the constraints — and a large proportion of problems resolve through channel planning, transmit power, band steering, minimum data rates, roaming tuning and SSID strategy. We add or move access points only where the measurements say they are needed. If the hardware genuinely is end of life or too limited for the load, we will tell you, but replacing kit before diagnosing the cause tends to reproduce the same problem on newer equipment.

Should guest Wi-Fi be separated from our corporate network?

Yes, and the same applies to any device you would not trust on the corporate network. Guest traffic should be segmented with its own access control and reporting, and smart-building and IoT kit — cameras, door controllers, building management systems — should never sit on a flat network alongside corporate data. Do we need Wi-Fi 7?

Usually not yet, and rarely as a fix for an existing problem. Newer standards raise the ceiling but they do not repair coverage gaps, interference or bad placement, and the benefit depends on client devices that support the standard. It makes most sense when you are refreshing hardware anyway or fitting out a new office. We work through the decision in should your business upgrade to Wi-Fi 7.

What do we get at the end of a Wi-Fi engagement?

Post-change survey results, user validation and a documented handover setting out the configuration standard — channel plan, SSID strategy, segmentation and access control — so the design is repeatable and the next person to touch it knows why it is set up that way. For multi-site organisations that standard is what keeps the offices consistent instead of each one drifting into its own configuration.

Can you manage our Wi-Fi on an ongoing basis?

Yes. If Wi-Fi is business-critical it should be managed like any other core system: monitoring and alerting on access point health, client experience and capacity pressure, planned firmware and security patching that does not break production, performance reporting, and helpdesk support with engineers behind it when an issue turns out to be a real network fault. That is usually delivered alongside managed IT services.
