Cybersecurity is for everyone not just your IT team. It is an unfortunate misconception that the security within a company is a problem for IT using firewalls and anti-virus applications but this simply isn’t true any longer, if it ever was. These days we all need to be better informed and able to act in a defensive capacity against the many common threats which face every business both large and small.
Make cybersecurity a priority
We all know that we should be careful when we’re online. We’ve been told to watch out for phishing emails and to never click on links from strangers. But even with all of this knowledge, many of us still don’t make cybersecurity a priority.
It’s time to change that. Cybersecurity is for everyone, and it’s something that we all need to take seriously. Here are some tips to help you make cybersecurity a priority:
1. Use strong but memorable passwords and never reuse them. Strong passwords are long (at least eight characters), contain a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols,
and are case-sensitive. You should never use the same password at more than one site, and you should change your passwords if you know they are compromised.
2. Be careful what you click on. Don’t click on links from people you don’t know, and be wary of email attachments from unknown senders. If you’re not sure if something is safe, err on the side of caution and don’t click on it.
3. Keep your software up to date. Software updates often include security fixes for vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit. By keeping your software up to date, you can help close security holes.

Phishing emails are so common these days we have become used to them in our daily lives both at work and in our personal emails. But we need to pay attention, they constantly improve and become more and more sophisticated and targeted. Your IT teams may install the latest and best technical measures to protect you but the best defence is knowledge.
Phishing emails are a type of email scams where hackers try to trick you into giving them your personal information. They do this by sending you an email that looks like it’s from a legitimate source, such as a bank or a website you use. The email will usually have a link that takes you to a fake website that looks real. Once you enter your information on the fake website, the hacker will now have access to your accounts.
To protect yourself from phishing scams, never click on links in emails unless you’re absolutely sure they’re legitimate. If you’re not sure, go to the website yourself by typing in the URL or using a bookmark. And always be suspicious of emails that ask for personal information or financial information. If you get an email like this, contact the company directly to see if it’s real. Don’t reply to the email or click on any links.
